KANI Programs & Services

KANI offers tailor-made programs and services to the community based on the specific needs of each family. Prevention is at the heart of what we do and we always put children first while working to keep families together.

Prevention Services

Prevention is at the core of what we do. Our goal is always to put children first, keep the family together and prevent families from entering the “system.” We tailor our prevention solutions to the needs of each individual family and have a dedicated Prevention team  within KANI.

When it’s determined a family is in need, for whatever reason, a Prevention Worker is the first on the scene. Need doesn’t necessarily mean crisis. It means someone in the family needs help.

Our Prevention Worker will assess a family’s specific needs and work directly with the family to offer supports and services. We are hands-on and practical. For example, if a family struggles with finances, KANI’s Prevention Worker can offer in-home finance education. Or, if money is an issue, offer a ride to lower cost grocery stores. Connections to community resources are part of their toolkit.

Each family’s situation will be different, and our Prevention Worker will find resources and solutions to suit their specific needs. They will work directly with a family for up to 90 days at a time, offering all the resources needed during that time.

Supportive Programming

Creek

KANI offers action-oriented programming and services to children and their families. As part of the community ourselves, we know how important it is to create trust when it comes to helping our families. We work together to keep families together, putting children first. Because we are created and run by community, our programming and support services are always evolving to meet changing needs. We offer programming and services to all family members, with many programs open to everyone.

Examples of current programming offered includes:

  • Healthy relationships for teens and adults
  • Therapy for loss and grieving (open to all)
  • Art therapy for adults
  • Traditional ribbon and skirt making (open to all)
  • Star blanket making (open to all)
  • Giveaway sessions where community shares needed household items

All sessions are free of charge and, depending on group size, take place in the community hall or at KANI’s offices. All sessions are held in the evening and include food for participants.

Alternative Care Program

The Alternative Care Program is aimed at keeping children within their own families, both on- and off-reserve, where possible. We provide emergency placement services for children, provide support and advocate for family/kinship placement, and provide training and oversight to our Alternative Care Providers.

Our goal is to keep children and families together and we work hard to offer supports and services to everyone in the family to make this possible. If we’ve done everything we can and a child still needs to be removed from the home, we offer interim care for that child through the Alternative Care Program.

This Program is overseen directly by KANI, ensuring the community is looking after its own children and families. We oversee the recruitment, assessment, and training of all Alternative Care Providers.

We always need more community members to join our Alternative Care Program to ensure we provide a safe, nurturing, and loving environment for children. If you are interested in joining the program, find out more by calling us today at 204-560-6565.

Abuse Unit

Beach Campfire

KANI puts children and their safety first.

If there is a case of physical, sexual, or mental abuse reported to KANI, we have a specially trained in-house Abuse Unit. They are trained to step in and provide intake, investigation, and assessment. By offering this service, KANI ensures that the community has its own trained abuse workers to undertake investigations, assess needs, and provide recommended treatment plans.

Our Abuse Unit has relationships with law enforcement, schools, and hospitals to ensure each case is handled efficiently and appropriately. The appropriate services and supports, including the inclusion of law enforcement, medical professionals, or other agencies, are assessed, and delivered quickly to ensure the safety of the child is always our primary concern.

Quality Assurance

Our Quality Assurance team is responsible for promoting, coordinating, and performing quality improvement criteria within KANI. We believe in continuously improving our programs and services and our team’s abilities to serve the community in the best ways possible. We review all our systems, processes, training, and compliance with agreed upon standards constantly.
